Buntingford - Since being in Buntingford it has been interesting learning about the history of the Monday Market. It is believed to be one of the oldest Markets in the Country. Originally known as Buntas Ford, it is first mentioned in a Knights Templars land document of 1185 and in 1253 Henry III granted a charter to hold a weekly market to the Manor of Corneybury. Buntingford’s heyday was in the early 1700s when it became a important stagecoach stop on the way to York. It is even reported that Samuel Pepys stayed at the George Inn. Many of the old coaching houses are now shops and dwelling house but retain the original character with some dating back to the 15th century. There is more about the history of Buntingford on www.buntingfordtowncouncil.co.uk

Evening classes – many people have successfully turned a hobby into a business. The income from the new business venture can either supplement an existing salary or could be a sole source of revenue. If you are looking for a change in direction then it could be worthwhile looking at the many evening courses offered at local colleges. There are also courses available to teach useful business skills such as book keeping. If you are looking for one off courses that are more geared purely to business then look at Business Link website (www.businesslink.gov.uk). There is a raft of information on the website itself and links to a vast variety of courses from routine finance, to time management, dealing with staff, trading overseas… and more.

E Vouchers – did you know that for start up businesses it is often possible to tap into funding for initial advice – up to £200 is available on an e voucher scheme – more information on this can be found from www.businesslink.gov.uk

Networking – if you are interested in meeting other businesses then you may want to put October 6th in your diary – Hertfordshire Business to Business exhibition is being held at Stevenage Arts and Leisure centre – full details can be found on www.hertsb2bexhibition.co.uk. If you prefer to network closer to home there are several groups in Royston and surrounding areas. Different groups meet at various times during the day so there is likely to be something that suits your schedule. If you are interested then give us a ring and we can point you ion the right direction. Alternatively you may wish to stick to online networking – have a look at www.linkedin.co.uk
